Summer is Near!

It's still a little chilly, but the grass is starting to grow and the rain is helping a lot! If you haven't already, NOW is the time to check out your lawn mowers and riding mowers! If you store your mower outside and uncovered, it's a good possibility you have water in your fuel tank and/or in the crankcase of the engine. If you left fuel in the tank from last year, and you're having trouble starting the engine, you may need to have the carburetor cleaned. If you put your mower in storage last year in poor repair, you may need maintenance or repair before the season starts. Remember to check the smell of your gasoline before you start the engine...if it smells more like turpentine than gasoline, dump the fuel before you try to start the engine! Check the oil before you try to start the engine...is it dirty, or low level? Good time for an oil change. Are the blades sharp? Your grass won't look good or grow well if it's shredded instead of cut. The shredded ends allow more moisture to escape from each blade of grass. Did the mice build a nest on the head of the engine? If they did, this could require some dismantling to get to all the nesting material...a fire on a mower is usually too close to the gas tank for the mower to survive the fire! And, if it's on a riding mower, and you haven't cleaned off last years' grass from the mower deck, you could be sitting in the middle of a very hot fire! Replacement costs? Riding mowers cost a minimum of $1,000, and if you want to buy a really cheap PUSH mower (not a Walk-behind), you'll spend at least $100. Maintenance is cheaper, by far.

Tillers with a bent sheet metal frame, joined in the center with a gasket, are great little units for catching water in the transmission area. Is your tiller hard to shift? Did you leave it outside in the garden over winter, uncovered? If you have, you may want to consider covering the tiller, or storing it inside under some form of shelter. We've had two of this type in the shop, and both of them wound up being junked. One is in front of my big "21" address rock at my driveway, serving as yard-art.

Don't forget the tires on your equipment! If they leak from running over those pesky puncture vines, Slime tire sealant is the easiest and cheapest fix! We install Slime in your tires for a very small hourly fee, and without markup on the 5 gallon keg of Slime we bought. We can put slime in your tires CHEAPER than you can buy it yourself!

Need a service on your equipment? We also bought 55 gallons of Shell 10W30 engine oil that we're selling (with a service) for $2.20/quart. You can't even buy CHEAP oil at that price!

Remember, here at CALL TOM!, we're on your side - NO markup on parts, a LOW hourly rate, and a REASONABLE cost for GOOD work. Try us, you won't regret it!

Winter is coming!...

Winter is here, snow has already fallen. Without any authority in saying so, I've heard this winter will be a rough winter. Agree or disagree, it's now time to think about putting your summer tools away and bringing out the winter tools.
Have your summer equipment serviced now, so when spring suddenly arrives, your lawn mower isn't broken, and in need of emergency-right-now repair!
Have your winter equipment serviced now, so it will be ready when the first blizzard hits. Nothing worse than having to use that shovel while the snowblower sits in the shop, broken. Or even, sits in MY shop, awaiting parts to repair it.
Get ahead of the game for a change...do it today! Call me for an immediate appointment!
CALL TOM! is ALWAYS open for YOUR convenience. I'm just a phone call away.

Farmers and Ranchers - Pump Engines, Wheel Line Engines

If you have water pumps, or wheel line moving engines, and I know you do, those little engines work their hearts out all summer long. You DEPEND on these little brute engines to start and run each and every time you pull that rope. How about a little TLC for that workhorse? Make it easier to start, more dependable, use less fuel, have a little more power, all possible with an oil change, maybe a new oil filter, fuel filter, spark plug. What about that pull rope? Is it looking a little frayed? Or will one more pull cause the rope to break, and the end of the rope disappear inside the recoil starter housing? (You just KNOW if that does happen, it'll be at midnight on Saturday!) Is the handle in good shape? Or do you get a blister on the third pull? Call me for an immediate appointment, bring in your equipment whenever it is convenient for YOU. I'll work it over for you, give you an ITEMIZED bill, all the parts cost the same price I paid for them.
You may not be using that equipment NOW, but spring is coming soon enough, and you'll expect to move wheel lines and pump water when it warms up and the ground dries out. Get it fixed up now, while the price (and the demand) is low, so you're ready to go in spring.
Or, you could try moving that wheel line in the mud by hand???

Do your spare engines need an overhaul? I can handle that, too! Be ready for the swap when that sick engine can't handle it anymore, then bring the sickie to me for an overhaul...ready to go next time you need it, no waiting for repair, add it into your repair budget to get it done when YOU can afford it!

Second hand stores: If that "thing" you're trying to sell needs some fixing before anyone will buy it, I understand your money limitations...if it costs too much to fix, nobody will buy it, or, you won't make any money on it if you do sell it. I can work within your budget. Give me a price, and I'll tell you whether or not I can do it for that amount.
I've had 40 years of experience making things work again. And when the equipment keeps breaking because of the intended use being more strenuous than the equipment was intended for, I can improve it so it does work for you. I'm not afraid of anything, large or small, call me and ask if I can fix it. If I can't...it won't cost you anything but the cost for parts.
I welcome new challenges...what have you got for me???

If you think you can't afford to maintain your equipment with minor tune-ups and oil and filter changes, just think what it will cost when you need to have that engine repaired or replaced! (See my BARTERING Page if you're really hurting!)
That chain saw you're using is really convenient, isn't it? Well, next time you pick up that saw, think about using an axe...that takes quite a bit more effort, doesn't it? Not to mention the safety aspect of swinging that axe that you're not used to swinging, getting tired, and...OUCH!, that trip to the hospital is REALLY gonna cost you!
Or, that tiller in the springtime... sure beats those hand tools. A pitchfork and shovel are going to wear you out before lunch. And the blisters!
How about that electric tool with the cut cord...that masking tape you put on it a few years back just ain't gonna cut it, now is it? An unexpected electro-shock therapy can really take the energy out of you, and you just KNOW she ain't gonna be happy that the Honey-do list didn't get done.
Your truck just got stuck in the snow, so you think you're gonna go get the tractor to pull it out? Guess what? The tractor won't start.
That tailgate on the trailer should hold for a while yet...UH OH!...how much did you pay for that load you just spread out all over the road? Just a touch of weld would've saved a lot of effort!

The whole point of this little story? Here it is...my shop rate is low, and I don't mark up any parts - you will pay more than I pay for them if you bought them yourself - I'll show you the receipt! All I charge is a minimum cost for my gasoline to pick up the parts, if I get them locally. Most of the time, if my customer isn't in a big hurry, I'll order parts on the internet at prices lower than local dealers.  My whole intention is to give the customer good service at as low a cost as possible. If I can give the customer good service at a low cost, guarantee my work, and not charge for every little detail and adjustment, I think I've won a loyal customer who will return with small jobs for me throughout the year, and never have a worry about being able to afford simple maintenance or repair.

I work on almost anything. No cars, no trucks. But if it'll fit in my shop, I can probably fix it. AND... if I can't fix it, there's NO LABOR CHARGE! Call me before you come over...I make parts runs myself, and I don't want to waste your time OR your money by not being here when you are.

If you broke it, we can probably fix it!
